Today, the Supreme Court heard an oral argument that could have a significant impact on homelessness across the nation.

Activists demonstrate at the Supreme Court as the justices consider a challenge to rulings that found punishing people for sleeping outside when shelter space is lacking amounts to unconstitutional cruel and unusual punishment , on Capitol Hill in Washington, Monday, April 22, 2024.

The city enforces a $295 fine for violations; it increases to $537.60 if it is not paid on time. After two citations, police can ban an individual from city property which opens the door to trespass charges which carry heavier fines and up to 30 days in jail. Plaintiffs argue the city does not have public shelters.
