Clear skies could mean the Northern Lights could be visible in parts of western Washington Friday night

NOAA said the sun produced strong solar flares beginning Wednesday, resulting in five outbursts of plasma capable of disrupting satellites in orbit and power grids here on Earth. Each eruption — known as a coronal mass ejection — can contain billions of tons of solar plasma. On Friday night or Saturday morning, the particles are expected to reach earth. These particles have the potential to generate northern lights when they arrive at our planet, gracing watchers with ethereal curtains of multicolored light usually only seen in the far north.
