EU lawmakers overwhelmingly backed a proposal on Monday to allow the European Union to retaliate more quickly in trade disputes, with a clear eye on the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

EU trade chief Phil Hogan earlier on Monday said the recent launch of a series of new U.S. trade investigations was totally unacceptable. However, the United States has blocked appointments to the Appellate Body, complaining it has overreached its mandate, and left it with too few members to rule.
