Soon after the explosion, people reported feeling and hearing the boom in Pasadena and in Channelview, across the Houston Ship Channel. A plume of black smoke drifted north and could be seen from downtown Houston. Representatives from London-based INEOS didn't respond to a request for comment or appear at the news conference. The facility makes phenol, which is used to make a variety of products such as electronics, plywood and medicine. It also makes cumene, used primarily to make other chemicals, such as phenol and acetone.
