Fans at the World Cup will not be able to drink beer at stadiums after a U-turn by FIFA just two days before the tournament kicks off. Why the decision has been made, why it matters and what it means for supporters in Qatar:
FIFA then released a statement on Friday that read: “Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters.
“I hope not,” Hennessey said. “They’re supporting us as our 12th man so hopefully it won’t distract them in any way.”Though alcoholic beer will no longer be served around stadium perimeters, FIFA says it will be allowed at its official “Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues”.There will be a 40,000-capacity fan zone in capital city Doha, where drinking can take place from 6.
Speaking to Sky News in October, the tournament’s chief organiser Nasser Al-Khater said that drunk fans could be taken to “a place to sober up”.At the 2019 Club But Reuters has reported that half a litre of beer will cost more like £11.50 — 50 Qatari riyals — inside the main fan zone. That falls in line with the relatively expensive prices that hotel bars charge in the Gulf Arab state, where a beer also costs around 50 riyals per half-litre.
Conrad Wiacek of data and analytics company GlobalData said FIFA risked “alienating” a key long-term partner.
