Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted as House Speaker Tuesday night in a historic vote.
“After Saturday's vote, McCarthy was pretty confident that Democrats would support him but days before the showdown, Nancy Pelosi put out a message to minority leader Hakeem Jeffries under no conditions,” he said. “You will hear Democrats say McCarthy's job is sort of a betrayal. He already knew he had lost eight Republicans and he had no chance of winning and he knew days before or what his fate was.
McCarthy told fellow House Republicans that he will not run again for speaker, according to a GOP lawmaker. In the meantime, McCarthy’s ally, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., has been named interim speaker. “Keep this in mind, this is a declaration of war because the bottom line is McCarthy was willing to cross the aisle and work with Democrats. Matt Gaetz and other Republicans did not like this. He wanted to build consensus,” Williams said. “Now let us see what happens to this country as we move forward as they search for a new speaker.”
