With the Conservatives expected to handily win the March 4 byelection in Durham, Ont., all eyes are on Jamil Jivani’s winning margins in comparison to Erin O’Toole’s win in the same riding in the 2012 byelection and the subsequent general elections, say some political players, adding that the result will provide a preview of how Canadians view the Liberal NDP supply-and-confidence agreement, and whether left-of-centre voters engage in strategic voting.
Fred DeLorey, the Conservative campaign director in the 2021 election, said that in the last few elections, the Durham Conservatives have outperformed the national party, and he will be watching if Jivani can deliver similar results. “If you look at this riding over the last number of elections, usually over-performs the national average for the Conservative Party by around 12 per cent,” said DeLorey. “I would be interested to see where it comes into that.
