A couple of days ago, Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk stared into the TV cameras at Canadian Tire Centre and said: “I’m done with camp. It was good, it was fun. But I’m absolutely done with it. Now we’re ready for the big games.”That “unparalleled success” Eugene Melynk promised four years ago? It’s time. It has to be time.
“The whole summer, you’re excited to get camp going and be with the guys again,” Claude Giroux said. “When you’re in camp and playing pre-season games, you can’t wait to get the season going. We had a good camp, we feel like we’re ready to go.” The Senators lineup features a cast of rising stars — a young group that includes Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson, Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson, Jakob Chychrun and Artem Zub, as well as long-time elite NHLer Giroux.
It all starts Wednesday. The Hurricanes, who won 52 games last season, are expected to be one of the NHL’s top teams. Some are looking into a crystal ball and predicting they’ll win the Stanley Cup.It’s a tough test for the Senators. But when you’re a team looking to play games in May and maybe June, these are the kind of victories you need.
