Texas played at its fastest pace in over a decade last season. Considering the successful results and coach Rodney Terry's track record, expect the Longhorns to keep utilizing an up-tempo attack moving forward.
Rodney Terry's Longhorns played at a breakneck speed last season and the team went on its deepest NCAA tournament run in over a decade. So Texas isn't likely to slow it down in Terry's first full season at the helm.AUSTIN — When Chris Beard arrived from Lubbock in April 2021, he’d already built a reputation as one of the best defensive coaches in the country.
That strategy worked, both under Beard and his interim-turned-full-time replacement, Terry. After ranking 336th out of 363 Division I teams in tempo that first season, Texas finished 98th last year. It averaged 68.8 possessions per 40 minutes, five more than the previous season, and posted the program’s highest offensive rating since 2007-08 .
Terry signed a five-year deal after taking the reins in December and guiding Texas through the tumult all the way to the Elite Eight. The team employed that same breakneck attacking speed — relative to the 2020-21 group, anyway — to great success, falling a few shots short of the program’s first Final Four appearance since 2003.
