Rey Vargas’ activity spoils Mark Magsayo’s dream night

With the victory, Vargas became a two-division world champion, overcoming a ninth-round knockdown to win 115-112 on two of the judges’ scorecards while the third saw it 114-113 for Magsayo.“I just kept moving and shrugging him off no matter what was happening,” Vargas said. “All that mattered for me was coming out with the victory in the end.”
Giving up nearly five inches in height and three inches in reach, Magsayo and Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach hatched a plan to attack from the inside. But the 5-foot-10 Vargas’ long arms kept Magsayo at a distance most of the night.Vargas went down several times in the ninth and 10th rounds, all but one ruled a slip by referee Jon Schorle.
Vargas said he wants to get right back in the ring, preferably in a title unification bout against WBA champ Leo Santa Cruz in a huge Mexico vs. Mexico showdown. It was a good night for San Antonio boxers on the undercard. Two posted victories while one fought to a draw.
