Jaiden Delaire, a 6-foot-9 forward, will have one year of eligibility left with Toreros
It remains to be seen if Steve Lavin can win games at the University of San Diego. But it’s apparent he can win over players.
On Tuesday, 6-foot-9 Jaiden Delaire, a two-year starter at Stanford, said he will transfer to USD for his last season of college basketball. Delaire becomes the fourth college player to commit to USD since Lavin became head coach last month. Asked why the Toreros, Delaire said, “The short answer is coach Lavin. But the long answer is I feel like I really connected with him. Coach Lavin has expressed to me plenty of times that he’s a relationship guy. The players he coached at UCLA , he has a relationship with those players to this day.Delaire played four seasons at Stanford, starting the past two seasons. He averaged 12.5 points and 4.1 rebounds as a junior on a team that finished 14-13. He averaged 10.
He’s the highest profile player to commit to USD since Lavin was hired. Joining Delaire are: 6-11 center Nic Lynch, a three-year starter at Lehigh; former Bucknell guard Deuce Turner; and 6-8 forward Bendji Pierre, who played two seasons at community colleges.By NCAA rule, Lavin can’t comment on the new players until they sign a non-binding scholarship agreement.
Two players on last year’s USD team have left the program. Guards Bryce Monroe and T.J. Berger have committed to new schools. Two other players are in the transfer portal .As for Delaire, he’s not lacking confidence. He said his goals are “First team all-conference, conference player of the year, obviously take the team to the NCAA Tournament, win the WCC and upset Gonzaga.”Norcross is a freelance writer.
