First Light celebrates Truth and Reconciliation Day
And at the Colonial Building in downtown St. John's, a few hundred folks gathered under the afternoon warm sunny skies and mid-teen temperatures as the First Light Native Friendship Centre celebrated Orange Shirt Day in a family-friendly Rally for Reconciliation.
As the dignitaries on hand were remaking speeches, First Light members went about the crowd using sacred grass in offering traditional smudging as the sound of native drums could be heard about. The Government of Canada officially recognized September 30, 2021, as the first annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Saturday, September 30, 2023, was National Truth & Reconciliation Day, and also Orange Shirt Day. And the First Light Native Friendship Centre celebrated the occasion at the Colonial Building.
