Then there is the crucial issue of the Northern Ireland Assembly, which the PM hopes will be up and running again before the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement in April. Downing Street does not see the signing of the deal as dependent on power-sharing restarting – rather, that the latter should follow the former.
If the Democratic Unionist Party supports the compromise deal, then hopes of power-sharing being restored in Northern Ireland will be raised. But it is not guaranteed. Finally, Mr Sunak faces a fresh battle with Brussels over trade even if a deal is secured, because the EU is concerned that the UK’s Retained Law Bill, which will scrap thousands of EU laws by the end of this year, will violate the original Brexit agreement.
This is because the bill could trigger a lowering of standards on environmental protections and workers’ rights, which would be in breach of the so-called level playing field provisions contained in the post-Brexit Trade and Co-operation Agreement signed in 2020. In that event, EU leaders could retaliate by effectively triggering a trade war – imposing tariffs on UK goods entering the EU single market,
