The project at the southern edge of the city near the South Boulevard Purple Line station would see 60 affordable units added to the city's stock.

Evanston’s Planning and Development Committee voted unanimously to approve an affordable housing complex project for the southern edge of the city. The committee voted 7-0 during its Oct. 9 meeting to approve a 60-unit complex named South Boulevard Shores at 504 to 514 South Boulevard next to Calvary Catholic Cemetery and steps from the South Boulevard CTA Purple Line station.

“That green space behind the four townhomes, we’ve had wonderful neighborhood block parties there for years and years. I watched my neighbors’ children grow up,” neighbor Doree Stein said at the Sept. 13 Land Use Commission meeting. “That’s all going to be gone.” Officials said the townhome residents will be provided with services and means to be able to move to either a rental unit with a housing voucher or another unit owned by the county in Evanston.
