Trump and Tehran may be chipping away at the Iran nuclear deal, but Europe is standing by it

After Iran said it would retaliate against U.S. President Donald Trump by canceling some of its commitments under the accord, the EU, Germany, France and the United Kingdom said on Wednesday that they would not reimpose sanctions based on the rhetoric coming out of Tehran.

Instead, a senior EU official said that the European powers would wait to take any action until there is confirmation of any material breach — as assessed by the International Atomic Energy Agency . A new report is due at the end of the month. "Iran's announcements are not a violation or a withdrawal of the nuclear deal,” the official said. “We will continue to abide by our commitment as long as Iran does."

The official seemed to leave open the possibility that Tehran might be bluffing. “We cannot snap back sanctions based on announcements,” the official added. ”If Iran breaches the agreement, then we would react.” The Europeans, along with China and Russia, have remained committed to the nuclear deal, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action , in the year since Trump unilaterally pulled out and announced the reimposition of economic sanctions against Iran. In recent days, Trump also cancelled waivers that had allowed a limited number of countries to continue buying Iranian oil. That move, which poses a serious threat to the Iranian economy, finally proved too much for Tehran.
