new clean air zones, a new wave of low emission zones will come into action across Europe this year.began a phased clean air policy several years ago, requiring cars to purchase and display a Crit’Air clean air windscreen sticker identifying its emission levels. Those with category 1 stickers are given preferential parking and traffic conditions. From July this year, cars must be at least category 2 – cars registered after January 2006 will need to pay a €4 daily entry fee.

Elsewhere in the country, authorities are pressing ahead with similar regulations. There are two types of low-emission zones: permanent and temporary emergency . Permanent ZCRs cover:French and foreign drivers need to register their vehicles to. This costs €4.61, including postage. A vehicle retains the same environmental classification throughout its lifetime; the certificate is valid for as long as it remains legible.

ZPA zones are imposed on certain vehicles when air pollution is deemed particularly high, so drivers should still apply for and display a Crit’Air sticker in order to comply with the conditions and be aware that they may not be able to access an urban area at short notice. Across Spain, the government announced last year that all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants must set up low emission zones. The ruling affects 149 cities from Valencia or Malaga to smaller cities such as Soria and Tarragona. Some authorities are not rushing to implement
