The former Conservative leader is the latest to cast doubt on the federal government’s “special rapporteur,” tasked with deciding whether Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should call the public inquiry that opposition parties have demanded for months.

O’Toole accused Johnston – the government’s chosen “special rapporteur” tasked with studying the issue – of failing to take his worries about foreign interference seriously at a recent meeting. O’Toole said he realized it was pointless to even raise concerns with Johnston that Beijing tried to work against O’Toole and other Conservative candidates in the 2021 federal election.

“David Johnston is someone I have great admiration for. I consider him to be a great Canadian, which is why I am disappointed that he lent his incredible goodwill to a flawed exercise.” The Conservatives have similarly questioned how they can trust a report on foreign interference in the 2021 election, because it was penned by Morris Rosenberg, a former public servant who was head of the Trudeau Foundation when it accepted a $200,000 donation from wealthy Chinese businessmen in 2016.
