Great Lakes scientists are heading out onto the ice this winter to learn more about one of the largest freshwater ecosystems on the planet.

“Some of the most dramatic changes are happening in the winter,” said project organizer Ted Ozersky, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota at Duluth. “If we don’t understand how the Great Lakes work for a big chunk of the year, I think we’re not in a good position to predict how they will change.”

The Winter Grab effort came about after a 2019 summit on winter limnology — the study of lakes — that sharpened the focus on winter water science. Ozersky and more than a dozen Great Lakes scientists publishedoutlining some of the major questions related to winter conditions, and the key influence ice coverage has on the lakes’ ecology — meaning that understanding what’s happening now with ice coverage is key as it changes.

There are also major biological questions, Ozersky said, about what winter means for zooplankton — essential to the food web’s base — and certain fish whose spawning is aided by ice coverage.
