The EPA has put on hold a decision whether to declare West Texas's Permian Basin a non-attainment area for ozone in a break for oil and gas drillers that faced potentially severe restrictions on the amount of pollution they release into the air.

Oil and gas lobbyists fought the designation, arguing companies were already taking steps to clean up their operations in advance of tougher standards on methane pollution, a byproduct of oil and gas drilling.
