Enterprise's Captain Archer was the first Star Trek captain to visit the Klingon home world, thanks to a trigger-happy farmer with a familiar surname.
The pilot episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, "Broken Bow," depicted First Contact between Humankind and the Klingon Empire, and also contained an Easter egg that honored the writer of Star Trek's best Klingon stories. Enterprise bridged the gap between Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: The Original Series by depicting the early days of Starfleet and the eventual foundation of the United Federation of Planets.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Klaang was a Klingon courier who held information about attempts by a Suliban terrorist organization, the Cabal to destabilize the Klingon Empire. Captain Jonathan Archer , driven by Human resentment for Vulcans post-First Contact, was determined to complete his mission when Klaang was recaptured by the Suliban. In doing so, Archer proved to the Vulcans that Humanity was ready to travel the stars.
In the text commentary for the episode on the Star Trek: Enterprise season 1 DVD, it was revealed that this was a nod by co-writer Brannon Braga to Ronald D. Moore, his friend and Star Trek staff writer who wrote some of the very best Klingon episodes. The fact that Farmer Moore gunned down Klaang was also apparently a reference to Ronald D. Moore's bloodthirsty nature when it came to character deaths.
Ronald D. Moore Was Star Trek's Best Klingon Storyteller As a writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ronald D. Moore earned the moniker of "the Klingon guy" for his work on "Sins of the Father", and also wrote "Redemption" the epic Klingon episode Gene Roddenberry tried to cancel. Moore wrote the majority of TNG and DS9's Klingon episodes and fleshed out their society in ways that hadn't previously been attempted in Star Trek up to that point.
As his friend and co-worker, Brannon Braga was well aware of Moore's status as "the Klingon guy," so it's a fun tribute to canonize his namesake as the first Human to encounter a Klingon in-universe. Moore had moved on to other projects by the time of Star Trek: Enterprise so didn't get a chance to explore the early days of the Klingon Empire pre-TOS.
