Officials are on high alert for turtles requiring immediate rescue, adding that only about one-third of them have been found alive.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife ServiceBetween April 1 and Aug. 19, 282 turtles have been found underweight and emaciated, mostly in the Coastal Bend region between Calhoun and Kleberg counties, according to anews release. According to the agency, the number is more than double the annual average of 109 loggerheads reported stranded between 2012 and 2021.
The release said officials are on high alert for incapacitated loggerheads requiring immediate rescue, adding that only about one-third of the turtles have been found alive and are receiving care at rehabilitation facilities in hopes that they will ultimately be released back into the Gulf of Mexico.
The turtles, protected by the Endangered Species Act, are one of five species of sea turtle known to inhabit the Gulf, with adults growing to be about 3 feet long and weighing 350 pounds.
