Twitter might see its biggest change yet, if Elon Musk is to be believed...
In November, Musk responded to a similar tweet that suggested increasing the character limit to 1000.was in 2017 when its founder Jack Dorsey was still CEO.
Twitter was started in 2006 as a microblogging platform but five years ago, Dorsey doubled the size of tweets from 140 to 280 characters. ‘It’s a good constraint for us, and it allows for of-the-moment brevity.’ Dorsey had said of the 140-character limit at the time. The original 140 limit had been based on SMS’ 160 character limit, as Twitter delivered posts from accounts you followed as text messages.
While smartphones made this function obsolete, Twitter discontinued its SMS service in most countries in 2020.
