It’s the ultimate puncture to his overinflated ego, and marks significant defeat for the Musk project which has sought to drag Twitter,But in reality little will change: while Mr Musk may step down as CEO, he still owns the company.
“Despite his claim that he will abide by his poll and step down as CEO, given how he has clearly demonstrated he is someone who does not know how to run a social media platform, there is a good chance he may just put in a puppet yes-man who aligns with Musk’s philosophy and thus will still make incredibly poor decisions when it comes to running Twitter,” says Steven Buckley, a lecturer in media and communications specialising in US politics and social media at City University, London.
Stefan Stern, visiting professor at Bayes Business School , City, University of London, also thinks the move is significant for Mr Musk’s ego but not for Twitter’s userbase. It’s also a test of Mr Musk’s principles – which so far have not held that firm. “I think we’re seeing what happens when an all-powerful boss with a short attention span suddenly gets bored with his latest acquisition,” says Professor Stern. “He never understood the thing he bought. He now either has to accept the result of the poll and step down – an ignominious exit – or he ignores the ‘vox populi’ he claimed to respect.”
