Bernie Sanders criticized Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos for 'using NASA as an ATM' at taxpayers' expense. The senator poses a very valid point: why is it the burden of the U.S. government to fund companies owned by two of the richest men in the world?
Bernie Sanders, a United States Senator from Vermont, is concerned that private space companies use NASA as an ATM to fund their latest endeavors. The prospects of space tourism and colonization — the novel idea that humans can travel privately to space for recreational and colonial purposes — are destined to become a reality backed by well-funded private corporations.
Why Is NASA Investing In Private Companies? As reasoning for his displeasure at the U.S. investment in private space companies, Sanders notes the immense wealth of both Musk and Bezos. The latter is worth north of $180 billion and receives federal funding for his Blue Origin space corporation despite owning luxurious properties and considerable capital. This is all without contributing to the taxes that pay for that very funding, Sanders claims.
