Elmhurst’s display will include three unique installations with more than 750 umbrellas filling the sky with color.
The Umbrella Sky Project drew large crowds to Schiller Court in downtown Elmhurst Saturday afternoon .
That was the scene Saturday afternoon for the official — excuse the expression — opening of Umbrella Sky Elmhurst. The opening afternoon party brought crowds, the sun, the Shout Section Big Band playing from the Schiller Street stage and along Schiller Court west of York Street swarms of selfies takers using the brightly colored umbrellas as backdrop.
The Umbrella Sky Project, created by Impact. Plan in 2012, began in Águeda, Portugal with a dream to bring color and fantasy to cities across the world. According to Christy Sopko, coordinating director for City Centre, an Elmhurst resident saw the art installation in Portugal and brought the idea back to Elmhurst. The Schiller Court installation, sponsored by Community Bank of Elmhurst, is the first to open.
