The U.S. Senate on May 4 voted 56-41 to confirm U.S. bankruptcy judge and Elmhurst resident LaShonda A. Hunt to be a federal-district court judge in the Chicago-based Northern District of Illinois.

Newly confirmed Federal District Judge LaShonda A. Hunt during the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on her nomination from February 2023

In January, Hunt was nominated to be a federal district judge after Sens. Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth recommended her to the White House. According to her U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee questionnaire, she submitted an application to Durbin’s office in October, and she interviewed separately with Durbin and Duckworth in December. At a U.S.

In addition to a variety of affiliations in the legal world, Hunt’s Senate Judiciary Committee questionnaire revealed that since 2022, she has served as a cancer care center volunteer at Elmhurst Hospital. Tobias pointed to several reasons why Hunt’s confirmation wasn’t a squeaker as some judicial confirmations are, likening her background to that of recently confirmed Chicago-based federal district judge Lindsay Jenkins of Clarendon Hills, who was confirmed by the Senate in February a 59-40 vote.
