Elly De La Cruz has the opportunity to become the first player to steal 100 bases in a season since 1987 when Vince Coleman accomplished the feat. He has prodigious power and will almost certainly win several Gold Gloves for his defense.
This has been amplified even further in 2024. De La Cruz has recorded 30 stolen bases in just 48 games, and that's despite going without any in his last four games. This is extra impressive because 15 teams have yet to steal 30 bases. De La Cruz's most impressive effort came last week when he stole four bases in a single game against the Los Angeles Dodgers .So, naturally, given a full season of work, we're asking if De La Cruz can hit the century mark.
De La Cruz has played in all 48 Reds games this season, leaving him 114 to get 70 more SBs. Assuming he keeps his current pace, he should be able to do it. Now, we can't exactly predict an injury — see Mike Trout — but any missed time would thwart his efforts. But, the thing that might cause him the most friction is his swing-and-miss. De La Cruz has struck out in 32% of his plate appearances, which is only marginally better than the 33.7% mark from last year.
