GreysAnatomy's Ellen Pompeo reveals her secret to social media success: 'I'm super spontaneous... I don't have anyone do my social media. I do it myself'
has played Dr. Meredith Grey on “Grey’s Anatomy,” one of the most empowered heroines on network TV. The head of surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital has demonstrated poise during the most complicated surgical procedures and unthinkable tragedies, but last month the coronavirus brought production of her ABC medical drama to a standstill.
One thing that [showrunner] Krista [Vernoff] and I talk a lot about is, as subtly as we can on a network soapy drama, to call out our healthcare system and the problems with it. We were able to have a story line that dealt with a young, undocumented child not having health insurance, [and that] was a story line that Krista and I felt really grateful to be able to tell.
I have to keep reminding myself this every day, and I have small kids, and it’s really more challenging for the children to understand it because they don’t have the perspective that we have. But as hard as we think it is to stay in and not see our friends and not go out, even if the weather is beautiful, I get it.
It really started probably like year 10, because by that time it was everybody who had sort of grown up with the show. They started watching the show when they were 14 or whatever, so when they’re 24, they’ve graduated college and now they’re in medical school. People were saying, “I went to medical school because of you. I went to nursing school because of you. I’m an x-ray tech because of ‘Grey’s.
GREY’S ANATOMY – “Give a Little Bit” – Meredith heads up a pro bono surgery day, but the overwhelming patient response causes her to struggle to keep things in order. DeLuca treats a teenage patient whom he suspects is in danger and desperately tries to get Bailey to support his theory on an all-new episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” THURSDAY, MARCH 19 , on ABC. Last year, “Grey’s Anatomy” passed “ER” as the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history.
