The studio president and creative director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, seemingly confirmed that a sequel to Elden Ring was in development in a snippet from the game’s guidebook. This news is somewhat expected. Elden Ring is a massively popular game and the studio's most successful title yet.
So, it wouldn’t necessarily be frustrating if the developers chose to canonize one conclusion or the other. In all likelihood, side characters and quests from the first game likely won’t make it into the sequel, which is one way to preserve and respect the choices players made in these quests. FromSoftware made a bold move with Dark Souls 2 by essentially making the first game’s ending meaningless. No matter what the player chose, the events of Dark Souls 2 would occur, and players would again embark on a quest to relink the fire. It was an interesting narrative decision that blossomed into a theme of cycles that marked the franchise’s overarching story.
For example, unique bosses that oppose the player’s ending choice in Elden Ring could be designed and integrated into the sequel. One obvious possibility is that players who chose the Frenzied Flame ending would be required to engage in a boss battle against Melina, who appears in that ending to swear vengeance against the Tarnished.
