The East County Homeless Task Force supports a Housing First approach, which prioritizes getting people off the street

East County’s largest city has stopped funding a regional organization meant to coordinate homelessness efforts, exposing a rift over the best approach to solving aWhile El Cajon’s contribution to the East County Homeless Task Force had been small, the move was nonetheless a significant symbol of long-simmering frustrations.

The city council voted 4-1 to stop giving the task force $5,000 a year, even as El Cajon continues to fund other homelessness efforts. The one holdout was Councilmember Michelle Metschel, who felt the task force should have more time to respond to concerns.Task force representatives defended their work in interviews and said the volunteer-driven organization would not be crippled by the loss of funding.

“I’m not withdrawing support,” said Councilmember Phil Ortiz, yet “all sides of the homeless problem” needed a voice.
