Canadian Employment Insurance Commission Commissioner for Workers, Pierre Laliberté and Tony Tracy, regional representative for Nova Scotia for the Canadian Labour Congress talk with seasonal workers at a town hall meeting on Cape Sable Island on April 22. KATHY JOHNSONBARRINGTON, N.S.
“We’ve been pinning our hopes on this grand reform the Liberals have been promising since 2015 and that has not materialized,” Laliberté said. “When the federal government tabled its budget last month we didn’t expect a massive reform by then but we didn’t expect nothing and this is what we got. We got the big zero.”
"In those regions, it wasn’t there were more jobs, there were less people looking for jobs, therefore the unemployment rate was dropping for that reason. You have many regions in the county that have that same profile of being reliant on commodities, being somewhat out of the way, facing a demographic challenge as well as an economic challenge,” said Laliberté.
Tony Tracy, regional representative for Nova Scotia for the Canadian Labour Congress, attended the meeting. Tracy said the labour congress has been lobbying for a uniform entrance requirement of the lessor of 300 hours or 12 weeks of insurable earnings and an increase of up to 50 weeks of benefits.
