An effort by New Jersey Democrats to put a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution before voters next year appears dead after Democratic Senate and General Assembly leaders failed to drum up enough support within their party to advance the measure.

Several Democratic state lawmakers objected to putting the amendment before voters next year, when all 120 legislative seats will be up for grabs, as potential funders for the initiative, such as Planned Parenthood of New Jersey, argued the measure would not go far enough to protect reproductive rights, per the New Jersey Globe.

Abortion rights fared well in ballot measures last Tuesday in California, Michigan, Vermont, Kentucky, and Montana, helping Democrats shave off a red wave. New Jersey Democrats in favor of the constitutional amendment had hoped it would boost turnout numbers in their favor, giving them an advantage over Republicans in the state Senate and the General Assembly in key races. Though it appears that Democratic state lawmakers will not have enough votes to pass it with a three-fifths majority, the measure may have another path to being put before voters.
