“And that is what the government wants — to not be held accountable for growing class sizes, to not have anyone know about class sizes, and how much more funding the system actually needs.”

Students in Grade 1 have seen classrooms balloon to as high as 35 in some Calgary schools, she said, while many high school students are in classes with up to 45 kids or more. “It’s difficult for teachers to make sure they can meet all the needs of their students in a large class. And we aren’t just looking at class-size increases, we are also seeing more complexities.

Still, the CBE has not reported its class-size averages, which they can still do so voluntarily. The Calgary Catholic School Board has also not provided class-size averages publicly. Neither school board would explain why, when asked. “The Alberta NDP will restore class-size reporting and work with boards, schools, and families to reduce class sizes,” Notley said at an event last week, promising to hire 4,000 new teachers and 3,000 educational assistants to help reduce class sizes.

“In 2018, the office of the Auditor General audited the design and operating effectiveness of the Department of Education’s results for the Class Size Initiative, introduced by the NDP. They found the department did not have effective processes to monitor the effectiveness of this initiative,” said spokesman Justin Marshall.
