Since the 2021 ruling, taxpayers have paid $38,444 in tickets racked up by city vehicles
, according to an estimate provided by the city earlier this week. That figure excludes tickets received by employees of the Edmonton Police Service or Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 569 president Steve Bradshaw did not provide a response to a request for comment. At the appeal hearing in December, union lawyer Patrick Nugent argued the case was not about whether the city can discipline transit operators who disobey traffic laws. “This case is not about a free pass. The City of Edmonton truck was recorded going 18 km/h over the speed limit in January of 2020 at Yellowhead Trail and Anthony Henday Drive, resulting in a $154 ticket.The policy applies only to photo enforcement tickets and not to drivers who are pulled over and ticketed by law enforcement.and range from $92 for going 10km/h over the posted speed limit up to $413 for going 50 km/h over the limit.
