Edmonton Heritage Festival ban a 'potential violations of the Alberta Human Rights Act': Russian pavilion yeg

In May, the Ukrainian Congress Canada Alberta Provincial Council sent a letter to the EHFA requesting the Russian pavilion be excluded from the festival. Orysia Boychuck, president of the council said it was crucial to “acknowledge the Russian community’s support of the invasion.”

The Russian association said the statement was false and they are not connected to the Russian government in any way and “have never been supported by the government as the other organization persistently stated.” They said they wanted to separate politics from culture but the Ukrainian pavilion “insisted” that culture is inseparable from the country’s government.

“We have been proactive in our communications with the EHFA, and attempted to make sure that the Ukrainian Pavilion directors stay away from politics and focus on the cultural aspects of the festival.” The group said their organization’s objective is to showcase Russian culture and traditions. They said their only source of funding are proceeds from the Heritage Festival which they also missed last year after voluntarily choosing to not participate.

The association said they were unable to conduct an interview at the time and due to past harassment of one of their members who spoke to the media, no one was able to commit to one at this time.
