After setting a North American pro sports record 22 straight home losses, the Edmonton Elks finally came up with a win in front of the home crowd — this one announced at 23,825 — for the first time since rebranding themselves from the Edmonton Eskimos.

The thing is, it could all be a moot point for any sort of late Elks surge, with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats upending the B.C. Lions one night earlier to all but shut the door on any real chance at an eastern crossover shot. The first quarter ended with Ottawa ahead 1-0 on the strength of a 74-yard punt by Richie Leone that bounced into the end zone on the game’s opening drive.

But it was the Elks kicking it through the uprights next, as Dean Faithfull chipped one from 17 yards away to go ahead 10-4. It was reminiscent of the 102-yard touchdown catch the league’s highest-paid receiver made in the season opener, before his season was interrupted by a visit to the six-game injured list. The first snap of the third quarter saw Gavin Cobb make a wide open 68-yard catch and run to put the Elks right on the doorstep, before Taylor Cornelius came in to score on a QB keeper and put the home team ahead 24-5.
