The Supreme Court’s decision also struck down sentences of more than 25 years without possibility of parole for anyone convicted of multiple murders after 2011.This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The Supreme Court said these sentences violate Section 12 of the Charter stating that “everyone has the right not to be subjected to any cruel and unusual treatment or punishment,” because they meant many multiple killers would never have any chance of rehabilitation.

It’s true rehabilitation is one of the legal principles judges are to apply in determining sentencing.A 75-year sentence with no chance of parole for someone who murdered three police officers is neither cruel, unusual nor does it throw the administration of justice into disrepute.
