EDITORIAL: Feds see the light on bail reform cdnpoli

Finally, it seems, the light bulb has switched on. The catch-and-release justice system is putting at risk the lives of innocent people, many of them police officers. This comes after pleas from premiers across the country and after a number of assaults and murders, allegedly by people out on bail.
Judges will be required to take into consideration an accused’s record of violence. All this is laudable, even though it comes too late. “You’re innocent until proven guilty and this is a critically important part of our legal system,” Lametti told reporters. “But what we’re doing for certain violent offences is changing the default position and making sure that it’s only in cases where there isn’t a threat to security.”That’s fair enough. And better late than never. What this does is send a signal to judges and others in the justice system that we’ve had enough. They must get tough on repeat violent offenders.
