“When I first got out of prison, I was a complete wreck,” he said. “When you do get out finally, you don’t even know how to live.”
Since being free, he’s labored to learn how to communicate again and found peace of mind in the countryside. He credits his job working with his horses not just for his livelihood but for much of his sanity today, along with the support of his wife.Prison systems use solitary to, in part, theoretically prevent violence by disrupting gang recruitment. But McKinney said that when he was first locked up as a 17-year-old, gangs were one of the few ways to gain some protection.
