The U.S. government brought Trevor Reed home. Now, it must work to get Whelan and Griner...

Trevor Reed, left, a Texas resident arrested in Russia in 2019, was freed through the bipartisan efforts of Texas Republican and Democratic lawmakers. We’ve passed the time in the United States when it could be confidently assumed that however acrimonious the political discourse, a great crisis or unexpected tragedy would bring all together for the common good. An unprecedented, deadly pandemic couldn’t accomplish that.

The Biden administration negotiated a prisoner swap; Reed was released in exchange for the commutation of a Russian serving 20 years in Connecticut for drug smuggling. This wouldn’t have happened without the concerted efforts of Texas Republican and Democratic legislators to keep attention on Reed’s plight while advocating for his freedom.

Reed’s release is cause for celebration, but two other Americans remain hostages of Putin’s judicial system.
