Mare edges Slammed in the Rancho Bernardo as John Sadler gears up for the $1 million Pacific Classic with undefeated Flightline
For trainer John Sadler, Sunday’s Rancho Bernardo Handicap could have been the perfect start to a momentous week.
Both horses had their moments in the lead of what was probably the best head-to-head race of Del Mar’s summer session to date. Earlier Sunday, it was announced that Flavien Prat will fly west to ride Flightline in the Pacific Classic. It will be the first local appearance of the five-time summer meeting riding champion since he moved east to Kentucky and New York last April. He also spent Memorial Day at Santa Anita.“Having Prat here for the Pacific Classic has been the plan all along,” said Sadler.
But Baffert said the next stop for Laurel River could be Grade I Awesome Again at Santa Anita on Oct. 1 before the trip to Kentucky. Baffert also said he had considered running Laurel River in the Pacific Classic.
