Annular solar eclipse tracked from Oregon to Texas on Oct. 14.

That's not a blot on the satellite image -- that's the shadow of the Moon as it tracked across the U.S. on Saturday, Oct. 14, during an annular solar eclipse. Much of the U.S. got to see at least some of the eclipse. This image is from NOAA's GOES-East satellite. An annular eclipse happens when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun and temporarily blocks sunlight from reaching the Earth.

Areas from Oregon southeastward to Texas were direcly in the path and saw the whole eclipse, which displayed a “ring of fire” effect where the Sun is totally obscured except for around the edges. The clouds were just clear enough for our WCM, Cory Mottice, to get some beautiful pictures of the eclipse. Here's a progression from beginning to end. Thanks for letting us share this, Cory!Others around the U.S. were treated to a partial eclipse, in which the whole sun was not obscured but only a piece of it.Here is the eclipse from a different vantage point on the West Coast:

Did you catch the partial eclipse this morning? 🌞🌑 Here's what the eclipse looked like on satellite as it passed over the western US!post. Here is what the moon's shadow looked like from our weather satellite's point of view as the shadow moved across the southwest U.S.
