Around 30 people gathered to protest the Iranian government, Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022 in Dallas. They yelled chants against the current Iran regime “Support Iran’s uprising! Now! Now! Now!”Thousands of miles away in North Texas, the diversity and passion of Iran’s people and cultures has been reflected in anti-regime protests over the past two weekends.

Last month, a 22-year old Iranian Kurdish woman died in police custody after allegedly violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code, according to the Associated Press.indicate she may have been beaten by Iran’s so-called “morality police” before falling into a coma and dying. Sept. 24. Their second protest on Oct. 1 at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza, attended by hundreds of people mostly from the Iranian community in the area, was another demonstration of solidarity with family and friends unreachable in Iran.

Shahabi said Amini’s death was “the trigger of all this rage and anger which has been built up in people’s hearts.”At the Saturday protest, hundreds of demonstrators marched around the Kennedy memorial and passing cars honked in support. Many attendees wore red, white, and green and carried the Iranian flag with Lion and the Sun, to represent their opposition to the current regime.

“I don’t want anyone to think that this is Islamophobic in any way,” Blloori said. “We want freedom of religion just like we are supposed to have in the U.S.”For 24-year old Naren Briar, a Kurdish American human rights advocate with an interest in religious minorities in the Middle East, Amini’s death struck close to home.A leader of an unofficial chapter of Kurdish Americans in Plano, Briar helped organize a protest Sept.

Briar’s parents fled from Iraq to North Texas during a time of significant diaspora of Kurds in the late 1980s and early 90s, Briar said, during Saddam Hussein’s presidency.
