East Side pastor known for supporting families mourns son killed in shooting
People stand together on Monday, April 4, 2022, at Phillis Wheatley Park as balloons float into the air during a remembrance of Avante Boyce, 19, who was fatally shot near the park on March 31. Avante Boyce is the son of Darrell Boyce, a prominent East Side anti-violence advocate.In the meantime, Boyce is continuing his mission on the East Side, one he said was just as important Monday as it was when he started 30 years ago.
Avante Boyce was described by family as energetic, ambitious and a loving father. He leaves behind two children, including a 7-month-old girl and a 4 year old. He was also Darrell Boyce’s only biological son. An aspiring artist, Avante Boyce had released one of his first songs less than a year ago, a tribute to one of his friends. It garnered more than 2,000 hits within the first week of its release, his father said.
Boyce said he wanted to be consistent in his message, saying that kids spell love in the form of time.On ExpressNews.com:Pastor Jimmy Robles, with Last Chance Ministries, was present to support Boyce and lead those gathered in prayer, asking them to lift their hands. “When you lose a child like this, it’s a pain you can’t explain,” Robles said, recalling countless vigils he has ministered at.
