SAN ANTONIO - Summertime is already a slow one when it comes to blood donations however, that shortage was really felt over the weekend after a surge of traumas
at local hospitals.Anyone who goes to one of their donation sites now through Sunday will get 1,000 reward points that can be redeemed for a $100 gift card to many different retailers, including Target, Lowes and even Starbucks. One of the blood types that are in highest demand is Type O, as Type O-Negative can be given to people with any blood type in emergencies, while O-Positive is the most common blood type in South Texas.
"We like to collect at least 600 units a day but right now we are collecting 350 to maybe 400 units a day, short of what we need to supply over 100 hospitals in 48 counties," said Roger Ruiz, South Texas Blood and Tissue spokesperson. The shortages of blood means that surgeries are postponed, people with cancer cannot receive treatment and those who get in an accident will not have the supply to give them a chance to live.
