Christopher Bernier requested $350,000 in a draft contract submitted to the district earlier this week. DCPS has countered with $280k.drawn up by his attorney, Bernier requested a salary of $350,000. The district offered $280,000. However, the district stipulated in its offer that Bernier could earn $5000 for reaching goals identified in the school board's strategic plan -- and would be eligible to receive four of these bonuses, totaling up to $20,000.
Bernier had requested to be paid $1,000 a month for his personal vehicle and gas. The district's proposal offers for him to use a district vehicle or reimbursed for gas used for his role.Both Bernier and the district agree on paying him $15,000 in temporary living expenses.DCPS announced in April that due to a budget short fall they would be eliminating 199 district-level positions and 507 school positions. They will also be increasing classes sizes.
The DCPS board has been discussing other ways to make up costs. A consultant hired by the district recommended closing several schools, such as Atlantic Beach Elementary School. the district will provide a counter-proposal through the Office of General Council.
