Dupont pleads guilty in La Porte chemical release that left four dead
Four workers died at DuPont's chemical plant in La Porte after being exposed to a chemical called methyl mercaptan. WASHINGTON - Chemical giant Dupont, along with one of the managers of its La Porte plant, pleaded guilty Tuesday to criminal negligence charges in regardsThe Delaware-based company agreed to pay a $12 million fine, as well as giving the U.S. probation office access to all its operating facilities for two years.
The penalty comes almost nine years after 24,000 pounds of a highly toxic pesticide, methyl mercaptan, was released into the air after a pipe at the plant became blocked. Sandel and other employees failed to advise the oncoming shift"sufficient instruction" for how to clear the blockage, EPA said. And the toxic gas was released into the surrounding community when a worker opened a valve on the plant's waste system the following morning.
"Four employees are dead because of DuPont’s criminal negligence,” U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani said in a statement. “The sentence imposed today sends a clear message of my office’s dedication to holding managers at industrial facilities, and the corporations that own and operate those facilities, accountable for violations of federal criminal laws; laws meant to protect the safety of workers and nearby communities.
Dupont did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Attempts to reach Sandel were not successful.
