The theme for 2023 is ‘Building Bridges: Celebrating Police and Community Partnerships.’
“Police Week is just so important for all of our members, both sworn and civilian supports,” said Constable Darryl Rice in an interview with Durham Radio News. “It gives us all an opportunity to interact with the community on a relaxed and welcoming platform so the community can learn about our roles, the jobs that we do and also see that we are real people, but our jobs […] are just different than others out there in the community.
From Monday until Thursday, an information booth will be set up at the Oshawa Centre’s centre court . Officers will be handing out swag and offering crime prevention tips. With DRPS preparing to mark its 50th anniversary in 2024, a few vehicles will be on display – including a vintage yellow cruiser. “We just have a lot of people out there that remember those being in service,” said Constable Rice. “As always, it’s quite an eye attraction to be able to come up and see that.”“I think it’s a very vital role,” said Rice. “We are often the first to respond and/or interact with the community during moments of crisis, and even through our 911 dispatchers [who] are usually the first ones to receive those calls.
