Drought is the most widespread in the U.S. in nine years, and it could expand this spring. Perspective:
released this week from NOAA, the only areas expected to be wetter than average from March through May include the Ohio Valley and southern Great Lakes and also parts of the Northwest.
However, much of the Southwest, central and southern Plains, Gulf Coast and Southeast coast, including Florida, may have a drier than usual spring. March through May precipitation outlook overlayed on current drought areas. Areas in the green/tan colors have an increasing chance of a wetter/drier than average spring.in the remainder of Texas not yet in drought, as well as the Florida Peninsula, southern Georgia and parts of the Carolinas.
Once summer arrives and the jet stream migrates toward the northern U.S., the only drought relief the South can receive would be from the summer thunderstorm season in the Desert Southwest; any wayward clusters of thunderstorms that can leave some areas flooded, but others dry; or tropical systems.
