OPP say a suspect wanted on an outstanding warrant was seen running through backyards in Thessalon before eventually surrendering to police
THESSALON – Two men were arrested Tuesday after a vehicle attempted to evade police through the streets of Thessalon before the passenger tried to get away on foot.
Police said on May 30, members from the East Algoma OPP were on patrol duties in Thessalon when, shortly after 3 p.m., they observed a suspicious vehicle leave an address on Federation Street then turn onto Ontario Street. The vehicle turned northbound at a high rate of speed, police said in a news release. Police pulled in behind the vehicle and were told the passenger had fled on foot. With assistance from the public, the man was located and surrendered to police.
Ronald Baron, 48, of Thessalon was arrested on an outstanding bench warrant, police said. He was also charged with obstructing a peace officer. The driver, Aldrick Niganabe, 46, of Mississauga First Nation was charged with flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Baron appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on May 31 and was remanded into custody.None of the allegations has been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
